Twitter Selected Content Blocking by Country

twitter bird icon Twitter has announced their ability and intention to block selected content by country.

We haven’t yet used this ability, but if and when we are required to withhold a Tweet in a specific country, we will attempt to let the user know, and we will clearly mark when the content has been withheld. As part of that transparency, we’ve expanded our partnership with Chilling Effects to share this new page, which makes it easier to find notices related to Twitter. There’s more information in the Help pages, both on the Policy and about Your Account Settings.

  2. Noam Chomsky warned about special interests’ desire to have the net to themselves some time ago. People listen to Chomsky, for good reasons. He knows a thing or zillions. But it seemed to me that folks overlooked that particular warning. Bit by bit, Those who run the world and see the people as the enemy, conveniently (why view those who you intend to exploit as neighbors, friends, fellow citizens?), are shutting down our freedoms while ramping up theirs (neoliberal capitalism, which embraces new liberalized everything capitalist). It’s not a result of forces beyond anyone’s control. It’s a result of morally rotten choices made by those who already have power.

Beware, too, of fake friends who offer tools for ‘the people’ but who are not really ‘of’ the people. (Twitter can crash and burn as far as I’m concerned.)

Yes, We stopped SOPA and PIPA, for the moment. But, just as activists stopped the MAI, that did not make it’s makers go away, nor did it mean the end of efforts to accomplish what the Mulitlateral Agreement on Investment would accomplish had it been made law. Neoliberal capitalists (corporatists, fascists, rightwingers, whatever you want to call them) do not just go away when they meet with resistance or setbacks. Why would they? They have the power and resources to make the world their kind of place. They just come back again and again until they get what they want. They were set back, by the people, a couple of times in Venezuela. They are at it again. (See Eval Golinger’s blog) Heck, They are regrouping before they are routed! They have back up plans for their back up plans for… They are organized and smart about collective action, which, when the people do it, they hate and denounce as ‘socialism’.

John Nichols recently said some interesting things (in relation to SOPA and PIPA) about capitalist colonizers of the net on The Nation magazine website: http://bit.ly/yWdSA2. His article contains many links which I have not had the opportunity to explore yet.

    • The legal issues centered on censorship in the cyber world are dominating the “news”. From SOPA and PIPA to ACTA and now Twitter blocking by country.
