Blogging Metrics: Getting Quantified

stats1 Blog metrics are a way to measure the popularity of a blog, reach, search terms and key words visitors used to locate your blog, visitors’ countries of origin, demographics, inbound links, outbound links, subscribers stats, page views, time on site, and more. There are as many different kinds of blogs as there are bloggers and apples to oranges comparisons are not useful so many bloggers use Quancast and/or Alexa in addition to other visitor tracking programs.

statsQuantcast is a free media measurement, web analytics service that allows users to view audience traffic for millions of sites the world over.   Every month Quantcast directly measures more than 200 billion requests for Internet content.

Quantcast statistics always refer to the usage from the United States, therefore Alexa data and Quantcast data do not always show the same results. Quantcast does not require a toolbar to be installed upon one’s web browser to obtain statistics. Instead participating websites voluntarily insert Quantcast HTML code inside Web pages they wish to have included in statistics.

stats iconAlexa’s Web Services offer a platform for creating innovative web solutions and services based on Alexa’s vast repository of information about the web. Developers, researchers, web site owners, and merchants can incorporate information about web sites directly into their own web sites or services. Users can access web site traffic data, related links, contact information, and a wide variety of other functionality and data.

Alexa could not exist without the participation of the Alexa Toolbar community. Each member of the community using the toolbar contributes valuable information about the web, how it is used, what is important and what is not. This information is returned to the community as Related Links, Traffic Rankings and more. Note: Alexa no longer relies solely upon it’s toolbar for data collection, and hasn’t relied upon it solely for more than a year, and possibly close to two years.

Getting quantified tips

1. Both of these sites can be used to view blog metrics free of charge and without registration.

2. The Quantcast tracking code will not operate on individual wordpress.com blogs, however, this isn’t problematic as all blogs hosted by wordpress.com are quantified.

3. Getting your blog quantified if it’s on a domain and being domain mapped by WordPress.com is not difficult.  I have just done this myself for two domains. Click the “get quantified” link and you will receive an email from Quancast Staff.  Reply and request your site(s) be quantified. Be sure to include both the “root” wordpress.com URL  and the domain URL. It took a week for my blogs to be qualified and the data to be made public.

4. It’s not necessary to download and use the Alexa toolbar. It’s discretionary.

    I just visited the Quantcast site and can see my site is already Quantified. It seems the service would be good in helping me to assess who my audience is. Since I’m already quantified, I sent an email explaining the situation. I gave them both my root url and the domain name; as per your info.

    While they can help in assessing who my current audience is; how can they help with improving the tags I use and keywords in my posts? Can they help in tracking down other similar sites so I can learn from “my betters”?

    I’m thinking of a verse from Ecclesiastic – “Be not excessive in your…!” Yes, I deliberately left off the rest; as it’s not related and yet a good blogging tip.

      That’s your responsibility. Read the search terms being used to locate your blog and make adjustments where required.

      You can type in the URL of any site into Quantcast or Alexa and read the data just like you do when you search your own site there.

  6. We have only previous conference links where the sites were in European cities. I think Europe comes to us via search keywords. At this point in time.

    Long story about blog promotion especially when there are various business parties involved. But won’t bore people here.

      Locations you want blog visitors to come from are keywords that are worthy of consideration in connection with making choices for topical coverage in future articles.

  7. Sigh, I’m not sure I want to get our blogs quantified. (There’s 3 of them.) The audience numbers would be small, very puny against yours TiTi.

    Anyway we don’t get too hung up on the total statistics side EXCEPT we have a blog that we definitely want to reach more of a European audience (for international cycling conference). It’s a long complicated story, but the reality is that the little conference team is too busy wrapped up in other matters related to planning and face-to-face networking, to do the virtual networking. That of course, includes participating in like subject forums, blog commenting on others, etc. on a regular basis.

    We do get European readership but I suspect it is not alot of our target audience because they get to blog by search keywords, of which some is not cycling but relates to other non-cycling subjects.

    Maybe I’ll just have to post a brief highlight of our geographic readership but Europeans seem to be so far shy to comment on our blog or they don’t know English. We’re hoping for abit more Asian readership after conference director speaks at a conference in Tawain next month!

    • The metrics are available on the quantcast domain whether or not you request the sites to be quanitified. They are liekwise avaliable on the Aleax domain whether or not you use register and use the toolbar.

      The result of asking for both of my domains being free hosted by wordpress.com be quantified was that they were no longer “rough estmate” but became “directly measured” and it took a week for the data to be displayed.

      Do you have keywords in your posts and categories and tags for European countries and/or events they host? I’m thinking that if I were a European bicyclist I would be typing those into Google and other search engines to locate blogs of interest.

    For years Alexa was cited as an unreliable source because of their dependence upon their toolbar…which is no longer true.

      • IMO, Alexa is still a highly unreliable source. A look at my own profile and where my traffic supposedly comes from is enough to convince me. E.g. according to Alexa, 7% of my traffic comes from the US, according to Google Analytics, 79% come from the US. So much for reliability…and as far as I can see, Alexa is still relying heavily on the toolbar, which I have installed and is what is causing the discrepancy). Quantcast on the other hand is another story, now that’s some stats I feel that I can trust.
