Different Usernames for Different Personas

UPDATE:

A change has been made by staff. We can no longer delete the original Administrator from our dashboards. We must contact staff to have this done.

See: “Transfer Note: For security purposes, there is no way to remove the original creator/owner from their blog. As such, if you wish to transfer your blog to another user/account, please follow the instructions here.”

It’s not surprising to find that many bloggers with more than one blog have more than one wordpress.com username. If you have would like to have another username that’s not associated with your first one it’s easy to register just as you did before but, do remember that the email addresses for each username must be unique.

Suppose you have registered two blogs under one username and you want to get a second username and transfer the second blog to the new one. Here’s how to do it.

(1) In the blog you want to transfer

-> Dashboard -> Options -> Privacy

you can temporarily make the blog private by checking the spot for
__ I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose. Then click “update options” to save the change.

(2) Log out of wordpress.com

(3) Sign up for wordpress.com using a different email address, and using a new username. Do not create a blog, just a username.

Tip: Be careful to choose a new username that is not the same as any of your blog names and cannot be directly associated with it.

(4) After you finish responding to the wordpress.com new user registration confirmation email log out of wordpress.com.

(5) Now log in as under your original username and go to the blog that you want to transfer i.e. the private blog

-> Dashboard -> Users.

You can now add your newly created user as an Administrator. Set the role of checked users to: Administrator. Then type the e-mail address of your newly created wordpress.com user to add them to the blog.

(6) Log out of wordpress.com again and then log in to your private blog as your new user.

-> Dashboard -> Users

You can now delete your original username from the blog. Remove checked users.

(7) Now you are ready to link link the new username/persona to the blog.
–> Users –> Your Profile

In the right hand column locate “Website” and type in the link to your wordpresss.com blog example: http://myblog.wordpress.com and when you have completed the fields click “Update Profile” .

(8) Lastly,you can make the blog public again

-> Dashboard -> Options -> Privacy

by checking the spot for
__ I would like my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Sphere, and in public listings around WordPress.com.

Tip: If you wish to you can notify your regular readers of your second blog of the new username/persona do so privately by email.

  1. Hi I am sorry if this has been answered before

    can I change the website linked to my user-name…….in comments I have already made with a different address?……..

    I have changed to a new address and put it in my profile…but it keeps going to the old site

    thxs

      No the change is not retroactive. When you make the change and link your username to a different blog it will only be reflected from that time forward. The only way it can be changed on old comments that you left on blogs when you had the first blog linked to your username is to contact every blogger who has a blog you left a comment on and ask them to change the link. Frankly, I would not waste my time doing that unless the number of comments I had left prior to the change was very low.

  2. thank you so much for this post… unfortunately I created a new blog instead of just a username… so my question is can I use the same procedure to extract an additional blog I added to a site that is functioning now as a group site… I do not want “my” personal blog to be connected to that site (I set up the site)… if I can’t do it this same way you describe above how would I manage to extract my blog? with another user name? I can’t even see how I would delete it without deleting the group… your advice would be most appreciated!

    • …I figured out that I could just transfer the blog to the new user/blog that took awhile thanks for being here I had to think all of this through to get to the answer

  3. Diurnal is great. I’ve just bought the upgrade and got it on my blog a few hours now. It needs some more modification and moving around, but I’m most productive in the early hours of the morning, so it’ll have to wait a little.

    I prefer it without the images as well.

  4. Per usual timethief, this is a great post covering on things that are not covered in such detail anywhere else! As well, I like the layout of the blog best of the last 5 or 6 that you have tried on it! :)

  5. Hmmm … no little images, eh? … well, this idea is sounding better and better … lol. They aren’t a deal breaker for me. I can get along without them. But why not ask Scott and see what he says?

  6. Themes are like clothes … lol … I have to try on several outfits before I decide to wear one and even then I’m not satisfied … lol. But I’m here to tell you that Diurnal is sure looking good to me. Maybe I’ll buy the upgrade and go for it. :)
